Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Cases recalled by Southport & Formby District Hospital
Over 500 eye examinations of diabetic patients are being reviewed after concerns about two members of staff at the Southport & Formby District Hospital. The screening for diabetic retinopathy was carried out at Southport & Formby District Hospital between April 2009 and July 2010.
The condition, a diabetes complication which damages the retina over time, can lead to blindness if not treated early.
The screening examination involves photographing the back of a patient’s eye and grading the images on a scale of 0 (no evidence of diabetic retinopathy) to 3.
It was during the period of performance monitoring that concerns were raised about two members of staff and they were taken off grading duties “in the interest of patient’s safety” the Trust said.
The two members of staff will return to their regular duties after receiving training to remedy the concerns raised in the performance test, the Trust said.
Please note that a helpline has been set up for any patient with concerns, the number is 01704 704070.
Rachel Donovan, Medical Negligence Solicitor, for John Pickering and Partners LLP said “the team at John Pickering and Partners urge anyone with concerns to urgently contact the helpline. If they have any legal concerns thereafter, they should then contact one of our clinical negligence specialist solicitors to discuss these further”.
