Hospital poisoned Paul and Liam McNeely for 25 years
Substantial settlement as The Royal Liverpool Hospital admit iron overload.
Rachel Donovan, Associate solicitor at John Pickering and Partners represented Paul and Liam McNeely against The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital NHS Trust.
Paul and Liam were born with a life threatening genetic condition called Pyruvate Kinase Disorder. This is an inherited blood disorder which manifests clinically as anaemia therefore both men require regular blood transfusions.

Repeated red cell transfusions caused excessive iron to load into their bodies causing iron overload. This is poisonous to the vital organs and from an early age patients with this disorder, or any disorder requiring blood transfusions, require medication to remove (chelate) the excess iron which cannot otherwise be excreted naturally.
The hospital failed to remove the iron and it built up in Paul and Liam’s body causing destruction of liver tissue, damaging the endocrine glands and the heart. This damage causes disturbed metabolism, growth retardation, diabetes and bone problems such as osteoporosis. The reproductive organs are also highly sensitive to iron damage and delayed or arrested puberty and fertility problems are common.
Paul and Liam obtained a substantial out of court settlement.
Other blood disorders include Thalassaemia, a inherited blood disease which means the body is unable to produce adult haemoglobin and Sickle cell disease which is a condition that distorts the normal round shape of red blood cells to sickle form meaning the cells cannot move through the body easily causing life threatening symptoms.
