This involves the study of radiographs or other imaging techniques such as CT scansor MRI scan. The misdiagnosis of results can have serious consequences.

The Role of a Radiologist

The role of a radiologist is to interpret images and to make a diagnosis by correlating their medical knowledge with the patients’ clinical condition, provided by the referring clinician. With the clinical information provided and the results of the investigation undertaken the clinical radiologist should be in a position to either interpret the investigation as normal or exclude the diagnosis raised by the referring clinician, to raise the possibility of a diagnosis or of differential diagnosis or, make a firm diagnosis.

The radiologist has a duty to interpret the images and accurately report on the findings identified.

Examples of failure in this area of medicine include:

• Failing to recognise a mass
• Diagnosing a mass as normal when in fact it is cancerous
• Misinterpreting biopsy slides (pathology)
• Administrative errors – filing scan reports away without first acting on them
• Cancellation of Appointment so by the time the patient is seen to discuss the results the cancer has spread.
